Elderberry & Echinacea Syrup

This wonderfully rich and soothing syrup can be taken as it is or diluted in hot or cold water. A spoonful a day is all that’s required as preventative dose but this can be upped to 3-4 x daily at the first signs of a cold. Below is a bit of information on how the main ingredients work:

Elderberries are rich in flavonoids; in particular, anthocyanins, which give them their beautiful deep purple colour. Anthocyanins increase the production of cytokines which in turn enhance the body's immune response. Elderberries also contain anti-viral agents which is why they are probably most famous for their use against colds and flu. As with

Echinacea - studies on Elderberry have shown that regular use can help to shorten the length of a cold Echinacea is well known for being able to prevent coughs and colds and has been proven to increase the number of white blood cells and fight infections. It has also been shown to reduce the duration of a cold by one to two days.

Ginger contains a group of compounds called gingerols which give it its anti-inflammatory properties ~ they work by interrupting the inflammatory process. The bunged up feeling we get when we have a cold comes from inflammation of the mucous membranes that line the nose and sinuses so ginger can help to reduce this sensation.

Cinnamon is warming, comforting and uplifting. It has anti-bacterial qualities and is also used a a natural preservative. Cinnamon settles the digestive system and can help reduce nausea.

Star Anise is a potent anti-viral and is particularly useful for treating sore throats and coughs. It is also rich in antioxidants and Vitamin C. Like cinnamon and ginger, it will settle the digestive system and ease nausea.
